I felt ready to cross the Bay of Biscay. First, though, I needed to get properly offshore. The forecast promised mild northwest winds, perfect for my northeast heading.
The day turned into a frustrating game of meteorological whack-a-mole. Five separate times the wind crept above 6 knots, and each time I’d eagerly hoist full sail, ready to make the big jump ahead. And each time, after maybe 20 minutes, the wind would die completely, leaving me with slatting sails and zero progress.
After eight hours of this stop-start nonsense, mostly motoring with brief interludes of futile sailing, I was still hugging the coast. Time for a rethink. I turned up the Ria de Cedeira to anchor and reconsider my options.
